Trust Center / Age checks and biometric data

18 and over. And no biometric data until consent is in place.

Face and ID checks are not in use for any partner. No face images, face geometry or ID documents are collected until 30 November 2026, when the written consent screen goes live. This page sets out how the checks will work from then.

Not in use · until 30 November 2026Until then, every member must be 18 or over to join. Reports of under-age members are reviewed by a person within 4 hours.

How age checks will work.

  1. Consent first. The member reads what will happen and agrees in writing before any face or ID check. They are told that an AI system estimates their age (AI Act Article 50(3)).
  2. Facial age estimation. Yoti estimates the member’s age from a selfie. The selfie is deleted as soon as the estimate is returned.
  3. An ID check when the estimate is close to the limit, or something looks wrong. Yoti compares the member’s face with the photo on their ID.
  4. We keep only the result, the method and the date. Never the face image, face geometry or ID document.

Thresholds by country

How close is too close depends on what each regulator accepts. We will set the threshold per country.

Germany
The KJM accepts Yoti’s facial age estimation with a three-year buffer for 18+, so an estimate must read 21 or over. Below that, an ID check.
United Kingdom
Ofcom expects “highly effective” age assurance under the Online Safety Act, and lists facial age estimation and photo ID matching among the methods that can meet it.
EU
The Commission’s 2025 guidelines on protecting minors (DSA Article 28) say age checks should be accurate, reliable, robust, non-intrusive and non-discriminatory.
Biometric data policy

What happens to the data, in practice and in law.

In practice, face images are deleted as soon as each check is complete. The dates in the last paragraph of the policy are the legal outer limits that biometric privacy laws such as Illinois BIPA require us to publish, not how long we keep anything.

From 30 November 2026, when a member verifies their age or identity, our verification partner Yoti captures an image of their face and may create a mathematical representation of their facial features (face geometry). It may compare this with the photo on their ID document. This is done only to confirm that the member is a real adult whose face matches their ID. The data is collected by Yoti for the app the member uses and its platform provider, Dating API (High Intent Media Inc.).

We ask for written consent before any check. We do not keep face images or face geometry after the check is complete. We keep only the result, the method and the date. Yoti deletes an age estimation selfie as soon as the estimate is returned, and the face image from an ID check as soon as that check is complete. Yoti keeps ID document images for no more than 28 days before permanently deleting them.

In every case, biometric data is permanently destroyed at the earliest of: when the purpose of the check has been satisfied; 24 months after the member’s last interaction with the service; or 45 days after it is no longer needed. Where Texas law applies, it is destroyed no later than one year after the purpose ends.

We never sell, lease, trade or otherwise profit from biometric data. We never disclose it except to Yoti to carry out the check, or where the member consents or the law requires.

The age and biometric rules we build for.

Under the GDPR, face data used to identify someone is special category data and needs explicit consent (Article 9(2)(a)).
