Glossary / Churn

Churn

DefinitionChurn is the share of members or payers who leave in a period. For subscriptions it usually means payers who cancel or fail to renew.

Dating apps have unusual churn because success means leaving: a member who finds a partner stops using the app. That makes retention harder to read than in other subscription businesses.

Operators track payer churn monthly, separate voluntary cancellations from failed payments, and work on both: better matches and features for the first, renewal reminders and payment recovery for the second.
