Glossary / Chargeback

Chargeback

DefinitionA chargeback is when a bank reverses a card payment after the cardholder disputes it. The merchant loses the money and pays a fee unless it wins the dispute.

Members dispute payments for many reasons: forgotten renewals, unrecognised descriptors, or genuine fraud. Each chargeback costs the merchant the sale plus a fee, and too many can lead card networks to place the merchant in a monitoring programme or end its ability to take cards.

Dating companies reduce chargebacks with clear billing descriptors, renewal reminders, easy cancellation, fraud screening and sending evidence to banks automatically when a dispute is raised.
