In shortThe four largest listed dating brands use AI in four places: profile coaching, curated matching, message help and safety. Tinder has Chemistry, Hinge has Prompt Feedback and Convo Starters, Bumble has profile tools and its Bee matchmaker pilot, and Grindr has gAI and its paid EDGE tier. Safety tools have the clearest published results.

Tinder, Hinge, Bumble and Grindr all use AI in the same four places: helping members write better profiles, choosing who they see, helping them start conversations, and catching bad actors. Tinder's main bet is Chemistry, an AI-curated daily recommendation, which expanded to the US and Canada in March 2026 [1]. Hinge has the longest list of shipped tools, including Prompt Feedback and Convo Starters [6][7]. Bumble added AI profile and photo feedback in February 2026 and is piloting Bee, an AI matchmaker [8][9]. Grindr has gone furthest on charging for AI, with a premium tier built entirely on its gAI system [12]. Safety tools are the only area where these companies have published clear results.

We compiled the table below from company announcements and filings. Features are only included where the company itself describes them as AI, machine learning, deep learning or LLM-based.

Our count from the table: 19 features. Six are profile tools, six are matching, three are messaging and coaching, three are safety and one is a paid tier. Profile coaching and AI matching make up most of the work, and almost everything launched since late 2025.

Tinder: AI as the matching layer

Tinder showed most of its AI work at its Sparks keynote in March 2026. Chemistry replaces endless liking with a daily curated recommendation, based on a Q&A and an optional scan of the member's camera roll [1]. Tinder says parts of Chemistry will spread beyond a single feature into the whole app over time [1]. It says Learning Mode, its real-time recommendation system, is linked to new women being more likely to come back in their first week [1].

On safety, Tinder moved its message-checking prompts from keyword matching to LLM-based reading of tone and context [1]. Face Check, its mandatory face liveness check, launched in the UK and Singapore in the first quarter of 2026 [2]. At Hinge, which uses the same technology, Match Group said Face Check cut interactions with bad actors by 20% to 30% in launch markets, with minimal impact on revenue, in the three months to March 2026 [2].

Behind the product, Match Group moved its Seoul-based AI team of more than 20 data scientists and machine learning engineers to report to Tinder's CTO, working on AI photo uploading and recommendation algorithms [2]. In August 2026 it said Tinder was testing AI-powered profile building [3].

Hinge: small tools, written in the member's own words

Hinge has been the most careful. Prompt Feedback, launched in January 2025, coaches members on their prompt answers [7]. Its 2025 move to a deep-learning recommendation model contributed to a double-digit rise in matches, according to Hinge [7].

Convo Starters, launched in the US in December 2025, shows three tips based on someone's photo or prompt when a member sends a like [6]. Hinge says its generative AI tools do not give members pre-written text to copy and paste [6]. Its case for the feature: likes sent with a comment are twice as likely to lead to a date, and 35% of testers said Convo Starters made them more confident reaching out [6]. In August 2026 Match Group said Hinge was building its first reinforcement-learning model to decide when a member needs a nudge or tip [3].

Bumble: from profile help to an AI matchmaker

Bumble was early on AI safety. Deception Detector, launched in February 2024, cut member reports of spam, scam and fake accounts by 45% in its first two months, and helped block 95% of identified spam and scam accounts automatically in testing [11].

In February 2026 Bumble added AI-suggested Profile Guidance globally and AI Photo Feedback in the US [8]. The bigger change is Bee. Announced with fourth-quarter results in March 2026, it learns a member's values, goals and dating intentions through a private chat, then proposes two-person matches in a new experience called Dates [9]. At that point it was in an internal pilot, and Bumble said it would test removing the swipe in some markets [9]. For the wider story, see Bumble's rebuild.

Grindr: AI across the app, and a paid tier

Grindr describes gAI as an intelligence layer across the whole app rather than a single feature [12]. Its 2026 roadmap lists More of Your Type, Wingman search and a Smart Inbox, plus EDGE, its first premium tier built entirely on gAI [12]. EDGE includes AI summaries of past conversations in its A-List feature [12]. In August 2026 Grindr said it expects EDGE to be one of its main revenue growth drivers in 2027 and beyond, and that it was still refining the branding and packaging [13]. Of the four companies, Grindr is the only one that has made AI a paid tier rather than a free feature.

The less visible use: AI in engineering

Both public groups say AI is changing how fast they build. Match Group launched an AI enablement programme for all staff and planned to slow headcount growth for the rest of 2026 [2]. Its CFO told analysts the tools are expensive and slower hiring would help pay for them [5]. Match Group says AI helped Tinder's Missed Connections team go from idea to finished product in a few weeks [3].

Grindr estimates its engineering output rose about 2.5 times between July 2025 and April 2026, while its technical team grew 15% [13]. It says getting the same output without AI would have taken about 200 more engineers and about $60 million a year [13]. These are the company's own estimates and have not been independently checked.

Is it showing up in results?

These results cover the three months to June 2026. They show where each business stands, but they do not show that AI caused any of it.

Hinge's growth started before most of its AI tools launched, and Match Group puts it down mainly to European expansion [4]. Grindr points to stronger conversion and AI-driven engineering productivity among its reasons [13]. No company has published revenue figures for a single AI feature.

Questions

What AI features does Tinder have?

Tinder's main AI feature is Chemistry, a daily curated recommendation built from a Q&A and an optional Camera Roll Scan. In March 2026 it expanded from Australia and New Zealand to the US and Canada. Tinder also announced Learning Mode recommendations and LLM upgrades to its Are You Sure? and Does This Bother You? safety prompts.

Does Hinge use AI?

Yes. Hinge launched Prompt Feedback in January 2025 and moved its recommendations to a deep-learning model in 2025. It launched Convo Starters, a generative AI tool for first messages, in the US in December 2025.

What is Bumble's Bee?

Bee is an AI assistant that learns about a member through a private chat and then suggests matches in a new experience called Dates. In March 2026 it was in an internal pilot, with a beta planned.

What is Grindr gAI?

gAI is Grindr's own AI, which the company is building into discovery, search and its inbox. EDGE is Grindr's first premium tier built entirely on gAI, and it was in beta in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and some US cities as of March 2026.

Can smaller dating apps add AI features?

The cheapest options are profile coaching and moderation. Curated matching like Tinder's Chemistry or Bumble's Bee needs a large member pool and plenty of data on each member to work well.

What it means for dating app operators

  1. Start with safety.

It is the only area with published results: 45% fewer reports at Bumble [11] and 20% to 30% fewer bad-actor interactions at Hinge [2]. Machine learning that screens for scams is also something members notice. See romance scams: what operators can do and our trust and safety entry.

  2. Profile coaching is the cheapest copy.

Tinder, Hinge and Bumble all ship it [1][7][8]. Follow Hinge and coach members in their own words rather than writing text for them [6].

  3. AI matching needs a big pool.

Chemistry and Bee depend on detailed data about each member and on enough members to choose from [1][9]. With a small pool, a better algorithm still has few people to suggest. Read dating app liquidity before you build this.

  4. Keep it optional.

Tinder's Camera Roll Scan is opt-in and Hinge lets members switch off Convo Starters [1][6]. That matters for privacy rules and for trust.

  5. Be cautious about charging for AI.

Grindr is still testing how to package EDGE [13]. For most apps, AI should support the existing subscription. Compare with our business models guide.
