# Relaunching a dating brand: lessons from EliteSingles

**In short:** EliteSingles closed on 30 April 2026 after its operator, Spark Networks, went into insolvency, and members lost their accounts and messages. It relaunched in September under SuccessfulMatch with a new member database. The lesson for buyers: the domain and name transfer easily, but members, store listings and subscriptions only survive if you plan for them.

EliteSingles closed on 30 April 2026 and came back under a new owner about four months later. Its operator, Spark Networks, had been in financial trouble for years, and its Berlin operating company entered preliminary insolvency in January 2026 [3]. Members were told two days before the closure that their accounts and conversations would go [5]. In September 2026 SuccessfulMatch relaunched the brand with a new design and an independent member database, so old accounts did not necessarily carry over [6].

The name survived. The members, as a working community, did not. This article sets out what happened, in order, and then what anyone buying, rescuing or relaunching a dating brand should learn from it.

Three details stand out. First, the warning signs were public for more than two years: Spark said in 2023 that without its restructuring plan it "would have to file for insolvency without undue delay" [7]. Second, the end was fast once funding stopped, roughly three and a half months from insolvency to closure [3][5]. Third, the relaunch kept the brand's positioning, aimed at "educated, ambitious and relationship-focused singles", but changed product, prices and membership structure [6].

## What the relaunch kept and what it lost

| Asset | Kept by the new owner? | What we know |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Domain and brand name | Yes | SuccessfulMatch operates the EliteSingles domain [6] |
| Positioning | Yes | Still aimed at relationship-focused, educated singles [6] |
| Matching approach | Largely | Personality questionnaire kept, with daily matches, profile verification and voice introductions added [6] |
| Member accounts and history | No | Independent member database; old accounts may not carry over [6] |
| Paid subscriptions | Handled separately | Subscriptions were tied to old accounts and the new FAQ explains how to deal with them [6] |
| Prices | Changed | One month at $64.99, three months at $34.99 a month [6] |

Other brands from the same portfolio took a different route. Zoosk, JDate, JSwipe and Christian Mingle now appear as Black Cap brands, running on shared company infrastructure [13]. We could not find a published date or price for that transfer.

## Lessons for anyone buying or relaunching a dating brand

### 1. Members are the asset, and they decay fast

A dating app is only worth joining if there are people to meet. Once members have been told their accounts are gone, most will have moved to another app before a relaunch arrives. The EliteSingles relaunch had to rebuild its community from scratch [6]. If you are buying a brand in distress, the single most valuable thing you can do is keep it running through the sale. Our guide to [migrating without losing members](/insights/migrate-dating-app-without-losing-members) covers how.

### 2. Store listings can move, but only if someone moves them

Apple lets one developer transfer an app to another. The app keeps its bundle ID, its reviews and ratings, and members keep receiving updates [8]. Apps with auto-renewable subscriptions must share an app-specific shared secret so the new owner can verify subscriptions [8]. The transfer is blocked if the app is in review or pre-order, or if its in-app purchase product IDs clash with the buyer's [9].

Google Play transfers members, download statistics, ratings and reviews, store listing information and subscriptions [10]. Orders placed before the transfer stay with the old account, which must handle their refunds, and earnings reports must be downloaded first [10].

Both stores need the seller's account to be active: Apple requires accounts that are not in a pending or changing state, with current agreements accepted [9], and Google requires the account and apps to comply with its policies [10]. In an insolvency, that means agreeing the transfer with the administrator before accounts lapse.

### 3. Store status is part of the deal

A listing can disappear for reasons unrelated to the sale. Match Group recorded a $25.2 million impairment on the Azar trade name after Apple removed the app from the App Store following a February 2026 change to its guidelines [11]. That change clarified that apps with random or anonymous chat fall under Apple's rules for content created by members [12]. Before buying, check the app's review history, any warnings and whether its features sit close to a rule that is changing.

### 4. Subscriptions need a plan for both sides

Members who paid for time they could not use will look for refunds, through the store or their bank. On Google Play, refunds for orders before a transfer stay with the original account [10]. If the old operator is insolvent, those members may end up blaming the brand you just bought. Decide before launch whether to honour remaining time, offer credit or explain clearly why you cannot. Read about [chargebacks](/glossary/chargeback) if you plan to sell on the web.

### 5. Data decides whether a relaunch is a rescue or a restart

EliteSingles members were told their data and conversations would be permanently deleted [5]. Deletion protects members, but it also means the new owner starts with an empty database [6]. Whether a buyer can lawfully take over member data depends on what members were told when they joined and on the privacy law where they live. Take legal advice early, and write down what members will be told.

### 6. A new owner inherits old technology

Spark had already outsourced parts of engineering and maintenance and cut staff before its insolvency [7]. Any buyer of a brand like that takes on a platform that a shrinking team has run for years. Perry Street Software, which bought GROWLr from The Meet Group in October 2026, announced a major overhaul for early 2027 [14]. Budget for a rebuild from the start rather than discovering the need after launch. Our [build vs buy guide](/insights/build-vs-buy-dating-app) compares the options.

## Checklist before you buy or relaunch

- Is the app still live, and can it stay live until completion?
- Who holds the Apple and Google developer accounts, and are they active and in good standing [9][10]?
- Do the app's in-app purchase product IDs clash with any in your own account [9]?
- How many active subscriptions are there, and who handles refunds for orders before the transfer [10]?
- What did members agree to about their data, and can it lawfully move?
- What is the store review history, and is any feature near a rule that is changing [11][12]?
- Who runs the platform today, and what would it cost to rebuild it?
- What will members be told, by whom, and when?

## What it means for dating app operators

- **Act before the closure email.** The difference between a rescue and a restart is whether members ever see a shutdown notice [5][6].
- **Treat store accounts as assets in every contract.** Who owns the developer accounts decides whether a buyer can move the listing, its ratings and its subscriptions [8][10].
- **Have a run-off plan even if you never sell.** Spark's brands went from lender decision to closure in months [4][5]. Data export, store transfer and member communication plans should already exist.
- **Expect to rebuild.** Buyers of distressed brands usually inherit old platforms [7][14]. If you want a partner to run the rebuild, the backend, moderation and store releases while you keep the brand, see [how it works](/how-it-works).

## Questions

**Why did EliteSingles shut down?**

Its operator, Spark Networks, was in financial trouble. Spark Networks Services GmbH entered preliminary insolvency in Berlin in January 2026 [3], and its lender had pulled funding [4]. EliteSingles closed on 30 April 2026 [5].

**Who owns EliteSingles now?**

SuccessfulMatch, which relaunched the brand in September 2026 on an independent member database [6].

**Can old EliteSingles members log in to the new site?**

Not necessarily. The relaunched site uses a new member database, so old accounts and connections may not carry over [6].

**Do ratings and subscribers move when an app is transferred?**

On Apple's App Store, a transferred app keeps its reviews and ratings and members keep receiving updates [8]. On Google Play, members, ratings, reviews and subscriptions transfer, but orders placed before the transfer stay with the old account [10].
