# French dating app market 2026: top apps, owners and rules

Published 2026-10-18. Updated 2026-10-18. https://www.datingapi.io/insights/dating-app-market-france

**In short:** France's dating app market is led by Match Group, which owns Hinge, Tinder, Meetic and DisonsDemain. happn, the best-known French-founded app, now belongs to China's Hello Group, and Fruitz is back with its founders. Operators face EU platform rules enforced by Arcom, three-click cancellation and tighter age checks.

US-owned brands lead the French dating app market. On Similarweb's usage ranking of Android dating apps in France for 11 October 2026, Hinge was first and Tinder second, both owned by Match Group, with the French-founded happn third [1]. Match Group also owns Meetic, the brand that started French online dating in 2001 [5]. happn has belonged to China's Hello Group since September 2025 [2], and Fruitz is back with its founders after Bumble sold it [3]. For operators, the French rules that matter most are EU platform rules enforced by Arcom, three-click cancellation for online subscriptions and tighter expectations on age checks.

This is the fourth page in our market series, after the [UK](/insights/dating-app-market-uk), the [US](/insights/dating-app-market-us) and [Germany](/insights/dating-app-market-germany).

There are three caveats. The ranking covers Google Play only, it is a snapshot of a single day and it measures usage, not revenue. Even so, the pattern is clear. Match Group brands hold 3 of the top 5 places and 5 of the top 13 [1]. A French-founded app that keeps its own identity can still rank highly, as happn (third) and adopte (ninth) show [1]. Niche apps also make the list: Heavn and Theotokos for Christian dating, bpm for sport and DisonsDemain for over-50s all appear in the top 20 [1].

## Who owns the French dating market

### Match Group: Meetic and the global brands

Meetic launched in France and 12 other European countries in 2001 and joined Match Group in 2011 [5]. Since then it has added DisonsDemain for over-50s in 2017 and Even, an app for single parents, in 2023 [5]. In France, this gives Match Group a portfolio built by life stage. Tinder and Hinge cover younger members, Meetic covers people looking for a serious relationship and DisonsDemain covers over-50s. Our [Hinge profile](/insights/hinge-business-profile) explains why Hinge's rise in European markets matters.

### happn: from venture-backed to Hello Group

happn launched in 2014 and was mostly owned by funds including Alven, DN Capital, Eurazeo and Havas Participations before the sale [4]. Hello Group's annual report sets out the deal:

- Hello Group bought 100% of happn on 2 September 2025 for a cash consideration of RMB537.7m [2]. At the RMB6.9931 to $1 rate used in the report, that is about $76.9m [2].
- Goodwill of RMB359.3m made up about 67% of the price, which tells you the buyer paid mainly for growth and the team, not for assets on the balance sheet [2].
- From 2 September to 31 December 2025, happn added RMB106.7m of revenue (about $15.3m) and RMB14.5m of net income (about $2.1m) to Hello Group's results [2].
- Our rough run rate: RMB106.7m across those 121 days, scaled to 365 days, comes to about RMB322m, or roughly $46m a year. This ignores seasonality and is only a guide.
- CFNEWS reported that happn's revenue was above €40m in 2024 and its EBITDA margin was 10 to 20%, figures the companies did not publish [3].
- happn says it has 170 million registered members worldwide, of whom 16 million are in France [4].

Hello Group calls happn part of a group of dating products aimed mainly at developed markets [2]. In 2025, revenue from outside mainland China made up 19.3% of Hello Group's net revenue [2].

### Bumble, Fruitz and Once

Bumble Inc. owns Badoo and Bumble, both in the French top 10 [1]. See our [Badoo profile](/insights/badoo-business-profile) and [Bumble profile](/insights/bumble-business-profile). CFNEWS reports that Bumble bought Fruitz, another French app, for €65m and later sold it back to its founders because it was not profitable [3]. Once, the slow-dating app with a strong French following, was bought by Dating Group in 2021 for $18m (€14.8m) [7]. By September 2026 it had moved from one match a day to a chat and creator platform built on subscriptions and virtual currency [8]. Our [deals tracker](/insights/dating-app-deals-tracker) logs the wider run of sales and closures.

## Demand: how French singles see dating apps

Recent public data on demand in France is thin, so be careful with market-size estimates that do not show how they were calculated. The most solid survey we found is by Ifop for DisonsDemain, which polled 3,003 single people aged 15 and over in January 2023 [6]. It found that 39% of singles could see themselves signing up to a dating app, up from 18% in 2004 [6]. It also found that 70% saw these platforms as somewhere a lasting relationship could start, 25 points more than in 2005 [6].

For operators, this means the French audience is not new to dating apps, and plenty of members are open to a serious relationship. The fight is over [liquidity](/glossary/liquidity) and trust, not about teaching people what dating apps are.

## The rules: what applies in France

French operators answer to EU law, enforced through national authorities, plus some rules that are specific to France.

- **Digital Services Act (DSA).** The law to secure and regulate the digital space (loi SREN), promulgated on 21 March 2024, made Arcom France's digital services coordinator, alongside the CNIL (data protection) and the DGCCRF (consumer protection) [9]. In practice, notice-and-action, transparency and protection of minors are checked by the same small group of regulators.
- **Three-click cancellation.** Since 1 June 2023, contracts sold online must be easy to cancel online, under law no. 2022-1158 of 16 August 2022 [10]. Any dating subscription sold on the web in France needs a clear, easy-to-find way to cancel.
- **Personalised pricing.** After an EU consumer authority dialogue that began in July 2022, Tinder committed to tell consumers when discounts are personalised by automated means, and on what criteria, by mid-April 2024 [11]. Any operator that tests prices for each member in France should expect the same standard. See our [subscription price comparison](/insights/dating-app-subscription-prices).
- **Age.** On 21 July 2026, Parliament adopted a law banning social networks for under-15s, applying to new accounts from 1 September 2026 [12]. Dating apps are already for adults only. The direction is clear, though: French regulators expect real [age assurance](/glossary/age-assurance), not a tick-box. Our [age verification guide](/insights/age-verification-dating-apps) compares the methods.

## Payments

France follows the EU pattern on app stores. Payments inside iOS and Android apps go through Apple and Google, and in the EU the [Digital Markets Act](/insights/app-store-fees-dating-apps) has opened the door to [alternative payments](/glossary/alternative-payments) and links out to web checkout. Each route brings its own obligations. A web subscription gives you a better margin and a direct relationship with the member. It also makes you responsible for three-click cancellation, clear renewal terms and [chargebacks](/glossary/chargeback). A store subscription hands cancellation and refunds to Apple or Google, but costs more. Whichever route you take, show prices in euros including VAT, and make sure any personalised discount is disclosed in the way the Tinder commitments describe [11].

## What it means for dating app operators

- **Plan for Match Group in every segment.** It ranks in the top 5 with Hinge, Tinder and Meetic, and has a dedicated over-50s brand [1][5]. A newcomer needs a niche that no Match Group brand serves well, by faith, sport, region or relationship style, which is where the smaller apps on the list sit [1].
- **French origin no longer means French ownership.** happn is Chinese-owned and Once belongs to Dating Group [2][7]. Partners, advertisers and regulators will look at who controls your member data, so be ready to explain it.
- **The happn price is a useful benchmark.** About $76.9m for a profitable app ranked in the top 3 in France, at roughly 1.7 times our estimated run-rate revenue (76.9 divided by 46), shows what buyers pay for a profitable app, not a fast-growing one [1][2].
- **Build cancellation and pricing disclosure into the product.** Three-click cancellation and the Tinder commitments are cheaper to design in from the start than to retrofit after a DGCCRF check [10][11].
- **Treat age assurance as a cost of doing business.** With the under-15 law in force for new social accounts, expect French regulators to ask how you keep minors out [12].

## Questions

**What is the most popular dating app in France?**

On Similarweb's usage ranking of Android dating apps in France for 11 October 2026, Hinge was first, Tinder second and happn third [1]. That is a usage ranking on one store, not a revenue ranking.

**Who owns Meetic?**

Meetic was founded in France in 2001 and joined Match Group in 2011 [5]. Match Group also owns Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid and the over-50s brand DisonsDemain, which Meetic launched in 2017 [5].

**Who owns happn?**

Hello Group, the Nasdaq-listed owner of Momo and Tantan, bought 100% of happn on 2 September 2025 for a cash consideration of RMB537.7m, about $76.9m at the rate used in its annual report [2].

**Do French dating apps have to let members cancel online?**

Yes. Since 1 June 2023, French law has required businesses that sell contracts online to let consumers cancel online in a few clicks, known as résiliation en trois clics [10].
