**Age assurance is the umbrella term for checking that someone is old enough to use a service, from ID document checks to facial age estimation.**

Regulators increasingly require dating services to keep under-18s out using methods that are reliable, not just a date-of-birth box. Common methods include checking a government ID document, estimating age from a selfie, credit card checks and digital identity apps.

Each method trades accuracy against cost and sign-up friction. Operators usually combine a low-friction check at sign-up with stronger checks when risk signals appear.
